Buying Advice: 2006 Ford Escape XLT

I'm looking at purchasing a 2006 Ford Escape XLT, 2 wheel drive with the 4 cylinder engine. Body and interior are very clean. Vehicle has 112,xxx miles.

Looking around the internet has been very frustrating as far as providing any help on deciding if it is a good year to buy or not. Everything from 'wouldn't wish this car on my worse enemy' to five star reviews.

So I figured I'd come to a better source of information (here) and seek opinions on the 2006 Escape regarding reliability, as well as advice on things I should make certain to have my mechanic double check before pulling out the wallet and buying it.

Thanks for any help everyone! Looking forward to joining the Ford family.

On the 06 Escape biggest issue is the pcm would go bad and cause mis fires which in turn plugs up the catalytic converters. It was a issue I think more with the early built ones. I dont know if that was a issue for the 4 cylinder. It was a V6 issue. On the other side the wheel bearings can be a issue mine went at 160,000 miles . I had a 2001 V6 4X4 and traded it in with 198,000 miles, I rate is as one of the best cars I owned so much as My wife test drove a 2014 Titanium Escape, she bought a low mile 2010 Limited because she liked the 01. And when I got the 01 I read the reviews and got upset for buying it because the reviews. You have to think there are more people complain than compliment.

That PCM issue is on the 3.0 V6 only. It did not affect the 2.3 PCM.

My 06 with the 2.3 has a little under 190,000 miles on it, and it's still running strong. The trans has been rebuilt, just replaced the water pump and t-stat for the first time in May or June.

It's been a REALLY good vehicle. One of the best I've owned.
