I recently bought a 2000 F150 4x4 lariat in good shape. It's sporting the 5.4L with the 4R100 and 4406E tcase, 172k miles on the clock. This engine is rated at 260 hp, 350 ft lbs...

This will be my new DD. Plans are to modify it to get better fuel economy. A little research turned up with underdrive pulley kit nets 2 mpg, an electric cooling fan another 2 mpg. Not sure on these figures, but they will be on the list. Also going to tune it with an SCT X3 handheld. Right now its getting 13.8. I found the upstream DPFE hose disconnected, so I hooked it back up but its pulled a little tight, so i might get a longer one if it comes loose again. Members on other forums are claiming 20-22 mpg's at 65-70 mph with simple mods. If i get 20 mpg empty, I'll be happy. Thinking of supercharging this with an M122 from a 2012 GT500, this may or may not help with fuel economy, but will make for an even more fun to drive truck...

Here's how to install a full length console from a 97-03 expedition. For me, this was basically a bolt in swap. First, removing the console...

Pull the cup holder section out, its held in by spring clips. You'll see the two bolts holding it to the floor. In the storage compartment, remove the liner to expose the rear bolts. Then remove the console...

In the photo above I removed the two rear studs. All 4 will need to be removed. When pulling the full length console from the junkyard, make sure to get both brackets and the bolts that hold them down. Luckily, the holes for the original console line up perfectly for the full length console's brackets. I just had to trim the carpet a little for both brackets....

Once the brackets are installed, slide the console in place, install the 4 bolts to secure the console to the brackets, install the cup holder section and the storage compartment liner, and you're done...

Ive got to get the lower panel where the console meets the dash, its actually pushing my console away from the dash slightly. To get it functional, I'd have to get the duct work (obviously) that connects the console to the HVAC. Then I'd need to get power to the rear panel, as well as an overhead console for control access up front. I could probably set it up like the explorers are and have rear controls only. I have been thinking of doing an EATC swap though...
I have looked at different cup holders as i need one, my spring is broke off of mine. I don't like the ash tray style as the cup holders are not as deep, and i don't smoke...

One of the main reasons I swapped in the full length console was a place to put my whelen control panel and CB, like I did in my console for the trac and my ranger. But I measured this console and I don't think I'll have the room width wise. May have to do some trimming. I'm pretty sure the CB is way too wide, so I'll have to find another place to mount it...

So I've been looking at a 32 valve 5.4 from an 01 navigator in the junkyard. Motor is bad, but i can get it complete for $100. I'll basically be getting it for the 4 valve heads, intake, and timing cover. Looking at the numbers, my 2 valve makes 260hp, 350tq. The 01 32 valve 5.4 makes 300hp, 355tq. It doesn't seem like its worth the effort for 40hp and 5tq. I would benefit from the spark plug issue as the 4 valve heads don't have that problem, but i do already have the kit to repair the heads. So should I go for it, or stay 2 valve?

Autolites, i myself installed them about 10k ago. All 4.6L's got the 4R70W, the 5.4L's got the E4OD, in 98-99 they switched to the 4R100....

I'll double check tomorrow. I know for a fact my rear axle is the 8.8, my GVW is 6600. I'm thinking if i had the 9.75 (which i may get in the 3.73 flavor, with matching front diff) I'd have the 7700 GVW. ..

Yeah, wish it wasnt the metric pattern, I'd stick it under HWW. It's got 17" wheels, and as big as the rotors are, i doubt i could fit anything smaller than 16's...

Found some info from another site. This is word for word from F150online.com...

The really crazy thing is that if you get the 5.4 in an Expedition, you automatically get the 4R100. It doesnt matter if its going to California or not. If you look at full size*Ford*1/2ton vans, they are just like the*F150- they all get the*4R70*except the California models. It just doesnt make any sense. BTW, the order code for the*4R70*is 44U, and 4R100 is 44E.

On a 1997/1998 F150/F250 LD, the 4.2L/4.6L trucks had a 4R70W (auto) or a M5OD (manual). The 5.4L had the E4OD.

On a*1999*F150*the 4.2L/4.6L trucks had a 4R70W (auto) or a M5OD (manual). The 5.4L has a stronger version of the 4R70W. Only the 5.4L California*F150*trucks had the 4R100 trans, which is the replacement for the E4OD. The*F250*LD had the 4R100 on all 5.4L trucks.

In 2000, the*F250*LD has been renamed*F150*with 7700 payload package. I think all*F150s*use the 4R70W for all automatic trannys, none of them get the 4R100.

The*Superduty*pickups all use the 4R100 for*automatic applications. Also, all 5.4L Expeditions/Navigators get the 4R100 trans (from 1999 and beyond).

The E4OD is no longer around.

So, I'll be looking for the 44E code. Looks like i may have some upgrades to do, or could do, not sure if I'll do them or leave it stock...ish

Another post from the same forum, this from a factory ford tech...

My goodness,*
do a freaking search allready...more than half of what's posted here is wrong, and most of it I've gone over in the thread titlted "4R70-4R100 what's the difference" or something like...

The 4R100 is the same transmission as the E4OD, just a differnet model year.
The PTO option on 4R100s is not "the only reason" they changed, it really had more to do with emission controls...
4R100 is a code for: 4 Gears, Rear Wheel drive, 1000 ft/lbs of torque rating...the reason a lightning gets one and a 7700# doesn't is the torque rating, the convertor multipliesflywheel*torque X 2, and the S/C Lightning 5.4 generates 440 lbs of torque, thus the*4R70*(4spd,RWD,700#) is not big enough, a Lightning would twist the*output*shaft*in half.*
The*4R70*is a fine transmission, don't worry about it.
Both of these transmissions come in over 30 models each, for differnt applications, so the*4R70*in a police cruiser is not the same*4R70*in a*4x4 f-150, but they are based on the same*design, conversely, the 4R100 in a Lightning is not the same one in a Deisel*F350*4x4, but they're both 4R100s.
The reason Ford laid back putting 4R100s in most*F150s*is a capacity issue, we just can't build enough of them, so what we do build go in the bigger trucks first. THe*4R70*has never been*CARB approved*for the 5.4 so CA trucks get 4R100s, and a few other states get them now, Virginia and Connecticut I think, and all Lightnings are 4R100s, as I said before.
By my onw count, I've built (well, part built) about 4 Million 4R100/E4ODs, so those little things that you gain from opening a few up I know pretty well.*
Noone needs to "write a series of articles" about*Ford Transmissions*for this board, if you do a search, I think you'll find the archive pretty complete, and if you have questions, ask me, I'm glad to help. A lot of dealers don't know squat, a lot are pretty good. Anywho, read the archive, and the one at Ford*Deisel.Com, they're both very good.

Gosh, I've ranted enough,,,but I've been over all this before and I hate to see urban legends created about transmissions....

Correct, the C6/E4OD/4R100/5R100/5R110 are all the same size case, with improvements with the newer years.
The C4/AOD/AODE/4R70W/4R75E are the same sizes...

Well, $h!t, looks like i have the 4R70W....

I guess I won't make too many power mods to this one. I just may swap in a navigator drivetrain if I keep this for any length of time...

The pistons are different for the 2v vs.the 4v heads, the have different valve reliefs cut into them, also the 3v heads have their own special pistons. it would not be worth it to swap the heads and pistons for just 40 hp. I would stay with the 2v heads and nurse it for as long as you can. Pick up the complete navi engine and fix it, maybe even hop it up some and have it on standby for when your current engine goes caput. If you have to drop the pan and swap out pistons to do a correct 4v head swap, it's the same amount of work to just fix the navi engine, unless the block is damaged.

Not really after performance as i am efficiency. My truck lists mpg as 14/18, an 01 navi lists 13/17, but the navi has a good 600 lbs more weight. My truck currently sits at 5720, with half a tank of fuel. I put my handheld tuner on my truck, but its only a canned tune for now. I haven't run it long enough to tell the effectiveness of it. Ive got it set at 10* retarded 0-2000 rpm, 4* advance at 2000-4000, 3* 4000-8000. Cruising speed 70 mph is about 17-1800. I've read some get better mpg at 75 than 70.
I'm also thinking the engine will get better efficiency with less load, so a switch from 355 to 373 might be in the future. The sport trac did awesome for towing, having the same trans, but different internals, but with a good 60 hp/100 tq less. I'm at the transmission's power limit without a rebuild with stronger internals, and I think I'm getting torque converter shutter. Every once in a while I feel it. Thinking I may go ahead and get a navi drivetrain, research what mods I can do to make it more efficient, like better rockers, low drag rings, etc.
I also gotta look at my rear axle better, I just might have the 9.75. I was under it yesterday looking at my exhaust, which needs attention, and it didn't look like an 8.8...

SVT

#23 ·
Gotta pull the cover for that. I'm sure the tag is still on the cover, just haven't got my butt under the rear to check. 2k was good for the trac as well, but the problem was 2k came at 60. I've thought about swapping in my teksid for better mpg, but it was easier to fix the stripped plug...

SVT

#24 ·
Since you have a 5.4 and rear discs, I would bet a dollar to a donut that you have a 9.75. All 5.4 equipped trucks are supposed to get the 9.75, also I don't believe you could get rear discs on an 8.8 until the 2004 redesign. But ford has done some strange things before.

#25 ·
I seen a 97 8.8 with discs, didn't believe my eyes when I first seen it. And thats what I thought about the 5.4, it got all the heavy duty stuff. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 9.75 would of given me the 7700 payload, right?

I don't know, on the 2004 up models the Heavy duty package or 7700 model got a bigger 10.25" axle with 7 lugs. I'm not not very educated on the build details of the 97-03's, never owned one. I'll research it a little and let you know if I find anything. Shane may know more.
