Found some info from another site. This is word for word from F150online.com...

The really crazy thing is that if you get the 5.4 in an Expedition, you automatically get the 4R100. It doesnt matter if its going to California or not. If you look at full size*Ford*1/2ton vans, they are just like the*F150- they all get the*4R70*except the California models. It just doesnt make any sense. BTW, the order code for the*4R70*is 44U, and 4R100 is 44E.

On a 1997/1998 F150/F250 LD, the 4.2L/4.6L trucks had a 4R70W (auto) or a M5OD (manual). The 5.4L had the E4OD.

On a*1999*F150*the 4.2L/4.6L trucks had a 4R70W (auto) or a M5OD (manual). The 5.4L has a stronger version of the 4R70W. Only the 5.4L California*F150*trucks had the 4R100 trans, which is the replacement for the E4OD. The*F250*LD had the 4R100 on all 5.4L trucks.

In 2000, the*F250*LD has been renamed*F150*with 7700 payload package. I think all*F150s*use the 4R70W for all automatic trannys, none of them get the 4R100.

The*Superduty*pickups all use the 4R100 for*automatic applications. Also, all 5.4L Expeditions/Navigators get the 4R100 trans (from 1999 and beyond).

The E4OD is no longer around.

So, I'll be looking for the 44E code. Looks like i may have some upgrades to do, or could do, not sure if I'll do them or leave it stock...ish

Another post from the same forum, this from a factory ford tech...

My goodness,*
do a freaking search allready...more than half of what's posted here is wrong, and most of it I've gone over in the thread titlted "4R70-4R100 what's the difference" or something like...

The 4R100 is the same transmission as the E4OD, just a differnet model year.
The PTO option on 4R100s is not "the only reason" they changed, it really had more to do with emission controls...
4R100 is a code for: 4 Gears, Rear Wheel drive, 1000 ft/lbs of torque rating...the reason a lightning gets one and a 7700# doesn't is the torque rating, the convertor multipliesflywheel*torque X 2, and the S/C Lightning 5.4 generates 440 lbs of torque, thus the*4R70*(4spd,RWD,700#) is not big enough, a Lightning would twist the*output*shaft*in half.*
The*4R70*is a fine transmission, don't worry about it.
Both of these transmissions come in over 30 models each, for differnt applications, so the*4R70*in a police cruiser is not the same*4R70*in a*4x4 f-150, but they are based on the same*design, conversely, the 4R100 in a Lightning is not the same one in a Deisel*F350*4x4, but they're both 4R100s.
The reason Ford laid back putting 4R100s in most*F150s*is a capacity issue, we just can't build enough of them, so what we do build go in the bigger trucks first. THe*4R70*has never been*CARB approved*for the 5.4 so CA trucks get 4R100s, and a few other states get them now, Virginia and Connecticut I think, and all Lightnings are 4R100s, as I said before.
By my onw count, I've built (well, part built) about 4 Million 4R100/E4ODs, so those little things that you gain from opening a few up I know pretty well.*
Noone needs to "write a series of articles" about*Ford Transmissions*for this board, if you do a search, I think you'll find the archive pretty complete, and if you have questions, ask me, I'm glad to help. A lot of dealers don't know squat, a lot are pretty good. Anywho, read the archive, and the one at Ford*Deisel.Com, they're both very good.

Gosh, I've ranted enough,,,but I've been over all this before and I hate to see urban legends created about transmissions....

So the 4R100 is the newer version of the E4OD, like the 4R70W is the newer version of the AOD/AODE?

Well, $h!t, looks like i have the 4R70W....

I guess I won't make too many power mods to this one. I just may swap in a navigator drivetrain if I keep this for any length of time...

Correct, the C6/E4OD/4R100/5R100/5R110 are all the same size case, with improvements with the newer years.
The C4/AOD/AODE/4R70W/4R75E are the same sizes...

The C4 became the A4LD. The AOD family is more closely related to an FMX.

I wouldn't be too disappointed in having a 4R70W. A 2000 4R70W should have the newer style (thicker steel and riveted) sun shell, and also the better valve body electronics.

I have 3 kids, but my Wife has been watching our neighbors daughter for them lately (long story short, they are struggling).
